Concept

One True Art: 16 Responses to the Question ‘What is art?’ is a performative artistic experiment inviting the spectator to reconsider the notion of art by simultaneously examining it from specific perspectives that range from the metaphysical to the political. The goal of the project is to formulate a definition of art or reflect on the reasons why such a definition is impossible.

The central component of the work is a public event comprising sixteen interviews, each of thirty minutes duration, with sixteen art experts – philosophers, critics, curators and artists – over the course of a single day in the Auditorium 400 Nouvel Building at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. This event will take place in English and will be recorded on video.

The main interest in this enduring format is to stage a situation in which a concentrated flow of ideas will engender a sense of interaction between the various positions and a specific engagement with the question on the part of the audience. The proposal of the event is that the term 'art' is used in such inappropriate abundance today that it is urgent to recapture the essence and specificity. And that this can only be achieved by working with a somehow unconventional format, able to circumvent the established paths.

The audiovisual material resulting from this encounter will be projected in the auditorium at the Edificio Sabatini of the museum until 6 January 2014.

One True Art is a project by Manuel Saiz for the Fisuras programme of the MNCARS.
