1986 – Axis Mundi

Subiendo el San Lorenzob

Axis Mundi

1986
Iron and salt rocks

I made this, my first serious sculpture, to be exhibited in the Palacio de Sastago, a Renaissance palace in the centre of Zaragoza in Spain. It is a 5 metre high tower representing a mountain. A few months earlier, I had climbed the mountain of San Lorenzo in La Rioja, where I was born, by walking in a spiral of seven rounds to the top. It took me a whole day. The tiny dot in the picture below is me during the performance.
