Statu Quo

1992
Iron, bricks, concrete

As part of In Conformity with Logic, a show I did in my hometown that brought together many works that were later shown in various exhibitions, I made this upside-down house of habitable dimensions. It was a real sculpture, with issues of volume and balance, and with a sculptural weight. I am amazed now to remember that the roof travelled around the UK to be shown in different venues in a tour called Five Voices from Spain. The walls were built locally. The sculpture was also shown at the Palacio de Velazquez in Madrid. The poster for the show in my home town showed the image of the long windows upside down, so that the house looked like it was hanging from the ceiling.
