Nothing has happened in my life. How can one know anything about the world and oneself if one was born in a long period of peace, in a small provincial town in a European country with a good climate, part of a well-to-do family where the parents loved each other and lived together with their children until death took one of them? What are the coronavirus, the fall of the Twin Towers or the war in Ukraine compared to any war of the last century, even for those who lived far from the battlefields or concentration camps?

Given these biographical conditions, it is only possible to grasp a little of reality if one concentrates on analysing it in order to extract from it what unites all human tragedies, and which appears in each individual when they affectionately contemplate their own dead, remembering and comparing them, extracting from each one that distilled truth that each individual death represents. It is only if I exclude what my dead represent that I can say that nothing has happened in my life; they have passed through my mind and through my body, more or less as they pass through everyone else: people differ in what they do with their own dead, in the prominence they give them within the fabric of the living. For me, biography is an appendix to thanatography, as it often is for many when they become very, very old and have no other choice.
